In the liner notes of 2001's Inside Out, Keith Jarrett told us that he and his long-running standards trio would be doing more unscripted free music in the future and here Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette begin with the leap of improvisation: short cells of tuneful melody pop up and fade; a soloist pulls the music in new directions; ideas and interplay reach epic proportions &'40;with two tunes passing the half-hour mark).
All in all, this is a fine representation of the band working at its highest creative level. Die spannenden, spontanen Sequenzen, Teile und Titel kommunikativen, freien Triospiels, die man sich in Konzerten und CDs der letzten Jahre oft noch umfangreicher gewünscht hätte, auf der vorliegenden, neuen Doppel-CD „Live in Tokyo“ (April 2001) sind sie nun in wunderbar weiten, ausgedehnten Exkursionen prickelnden Interplays zu finden, wobei immer wieder faszinierend ist, wie Jarrett in wellenförmigen, fliessenden Übergängen zwischen langen, harmonisch ungebundenen, quasi abstrakten Teilen und sich plötzlich entwickelndem, melodisch-thematischem Material hin und her wechselt, auch hier traumwandlerisch und inspirierend begleitet von Gary Peacock und Jack DeJohnette. Und noch eine Besonderheit zeichnet diese Aufnahmen aus: Alle Titel stammen von Jarrett oder dem Trio; es gibt also keine Standards oder bekannte Themen, was überhaupt kein Manko ist, im Gegenteil, wurden diese Songbookthemen von den Dreien doch in den letzten Jahrzehnten in phänomenal vielfältigen Facetten ausgiebig ausgeleuchtet. Fazit: 137 Minuten dichtes, impulsives, aber auch lyrisch-meditatives Trio-und Solospiel.

Keith Jarrett wurde am 8. Mai 1945 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, geboren. Im Alter von drei Jahren begann er mit dem Klavierspiel. Als Kind genoss er nicht nur klassischen Musikunterricht, sondern trat auch bereits an der Academy of Music in Philadelphia sowie im Madison Square Garden auf.

Keith Jarrett: Always Let Me Go
Keith Jarretts letztes Album dürfte für viele eine Überraschung gewesen sein. "Inside Out" stand für eine Art Neubeginn für ein längst zur Institution gewordenes Trio: Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock und Jack DeJohnette. Das sogenannte "Standards Trio" spielte frei und Standards-frei! Genau besehen war es kein Neubeginn, sondern im dialektischen Sinn eine Synthese.
Keith Jarretts Solo-Konzerte der siebziger Jahre lebten von der freien Improvisation. Jarretts Idealvorstellung war es, jedes Mal, wenn er sich ans Klavier setze, das Gefühl zu haben, er tue dies zum ersten Mal. Die dabei entstandene Musik schien dann oft weit von den eigentlichen Wurzeln des Jazz entfernt, stand bisweilen europäischer Klaviermusik der Spätromantik, des Impressionismus der frühen Moderne näher, doch in ihrem Bekenntnis zum echten Wagnis der Improvisation war sie reiner Jazz. Das war die These. Das sogenannte Standards Trio brachte die Antithese: Hier wurden die altehrwürdigen Standards zelebriert, die älteren Originals der Jazz-Kollegen wie die Musical- und Film-Songs des Great American Song Books. Die drei verneigten sich vor der Tradition und bewiesen wie unzählige vor ihnen, dass ein Song, so oft er auch gespielt worden ist, nie zu Tode gespielt werden kann, wenn sich frische Geister seiner annehmen.
"Inside Out" und nun in einem viel umfassenderen Sinne die japanischen Konzert-Mitschnitte von "Always Le Me Go" bilden die Synthese, vereinigen sie doch die Tugenden von Jarretts Solo-Konzerten mit denen des Standards Trios. Gerade das mit Standards erprobte, traumwandlerisch sichere Zusammenspiel der drei seit gut zwanzig Jahren bestens aufeinander eingespielten Herren und die dabei erworbene Reife und
