Rarely has a major motion picture attempted
to tell its story without words. This film
attempted, for the most part, to present the
reality of space travel. Without air, without
sound, no thundering rockets or eerie solar
winds. Most suprising of all, Kubrick rejected
the use of a dramatic underscore, almost
going for a documentary approach. Only a
sparse use of classical music would break the
silence. Ultimately, the result was a unique
motion picture experience that audiences
either hated, or passionately hailed as a mas-
terpiece of film making. Strauss could not
have imagined his composition would become
so linked to the rise of a sun seen from space,
or the image of a floating Starchild.

This is the one, the only, true outer space
adventure. Three men trapped inside a crip-
pled spacecraft. There will be no alien inter-
vention, no rocketships hurling to a last minute
rescue. Only the combined know how of the
ground crew and their own wits stand
between survival and a horrible death. For
those of us who lived through it, James
Horner - composer of BRAVEHEART, WIL-
LOW, ALIENS - wrote a score that captured
all the human pain and drama as the world
held its collective breath. You knew the film's
ending, but Horner made getting there all the
more thrilling. His main title is undiluted
"Americana", in the tradition of Aaron Cop-
land, Samuel Barber and Roy Harris, with solo
trumpet as a solitary, hear-rending feature.

Epic, romanticized chronicle of birth of the
American space program. From Chuck
Yaeger's heroic test flight that broke the
sound barrier, through to the exploits of the
Mercury 7 crew to become the fastest, highest
flying man. While John Glenn's name was
always synonymous with the original astro-
nauts, the film also reminded the world of the
contributions of Shepard, Grissom, and the
rest as real pioneers in a new frontier. Bill
Conti - composer of ROCKY, F.I.S.T., FOR
YOUR EYES ONLY - mixed his original
orchestral score with classical pieces, such as
Holst's THE PLANETS, and pop music of the
period. The finale of his orchestral suite from
the film includes nods towards the classics as
well as his film composer perdecessor's.
